Target Information
The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes about 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, while neutrophils contain it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative effects and serves as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils.
Plasma concentrations rise in diseases involving increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Calprotectin is also detectable in feces and other body fluids (plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, synovial fluid) during infection and inflammatory conditions.
