Target Information

The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes approximately 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes. It is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, while neutrophils carry it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative properties. It acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils. Plasma concentrations of calprotectin increase in diseases associated with elevated neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Calprotectin can be detected in feces, as granulocytes terminate their existence after transmigration through the intestinal wall. Elevated levels have also been found in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, and synovial fluid during infection and inflammatory conditions.
