Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may function as a surface receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis, adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of stem cells and progenitors.
It is believed to mediate attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may serve as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans, facilitating interactions with lectins. Additionally, CD34 may present carbohydrate ligands to selectins. The intracellular chain of CD34 can be phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction. Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
