Target Information
TPMT (Thiopurine S-methyltransferase) catalyzes the S-methylation of thiopurine drugs such as 6-mercaptopurine.
Defects in TPMT cause thiopurine S-methyltransferase deficiency, affecting drug metabolism.
This enzyme is involved in the inactivation of thiopurine drugs used as immunosuppressants or cytotoxic agents for conditions such as leukemia, autoimmune diseases, and organ transplantation.
Patients with reduced TPMT activity may experience toxicity at standard doses, with genetic variation at the TPMT locus influencing drug response.
