Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins. There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points between 5–8.5. These proteins are biochemically divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both families. Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
