Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typically endothelial markers, cytokeratins have been found in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 different cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
They are classified into two groups: type I (acidic) and type II (basic) polypeptides. Every epithelial cell expresses at least one of each type.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
