Target Information
Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological processes like arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that are activated upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases. The MMP1 gene encodes a secreted enzyme that degrades interstitial collagens types I, II, and III. This gene is part of a cluster located on chromosome 11q22.3, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
