CYP2E1 유전자는 cytochrome P450 효소 초패밀리에 속하며, 약물 대사 및 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드, 지질 합성에 관여하는 monooxygenase 효소를 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 소포체에 위치하며, 에탄올, 당뇨 상태, 기아 등에 의해 유도됩니다.
CYP2E1은 에탄올, 아세톤, 아세탈 등의 내인성 기질뿐 아니라 벤젠, 사염화탄소, 에틸렌글리콜, 니트로사민 등 외인성 기질도 대사합니다. 이러한 기질 다양성으로 인해 당생합성, 간경변, 당뇨병, 암 등 다양한 생리적 및 병리적 과정에 관여할 수 있습니다.
