Target Information
This gene encodes diazepam binding inhibitor (DBI), a protein regulated by hormones and involved in lipid metabolism. It displaces beta-carbolines and benzodiazepines that modulate signal transduction at type A GABA receptors in brain synapses. The protein is conserved from yeast to mammals, with a highly conserved hydrophobic binding site for medium- and long-chain acyl-CoA esters. DBI also mediates feedback regulation of pancreatic secretion, postprandial release of cholecystokinin, and corticotropin-dependent adrenal steroidogenesis. Three pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 6, 8, and 16, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
