Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with the extracellular (N-terminal) domain of standard CD44 (Phagocyte glycoprotein 1), an 80–95 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein (hyaladherin family) present on most cells and tissues such as leukocytes, endothelial cells, and mesenchymal cells. It is negative on platelets and hepatocytes.
Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and mediates cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 participates in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may increase in carcinomas, potentially linked to metastasis. It is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes.
Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels of CD44, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Alternative splicing of the CD44 gene produces multiple isoforms with distinct functions.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and it may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
