Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissue (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known, grouped into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) subfamilies.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker for stratified epithelial cells, distinguishing them from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one member of the acidic and one of the basic keratin families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
