Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known. Most CKs belong to either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 is a type I low molecular weight keratin that pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic keratin family member.
