Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. There are at least 20 different CKs, classified into type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, forms a complex with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
