Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified, generally classified as type I (acidic) or type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Typically, both acidic and basic keratins are expressed in all epithelial cells.
