Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified. Most CKs fall into two biochemical classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. At least one member of the acidic family and one of the basic family are expressed in all epithelial cells.
