Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides and multisubunit proteins. Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER. Unlike soluble ER proteins that contain the KDEL sequence for retention, calnexin lacks KDEL but has positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention. The protein consists of a large luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
