Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 different CKs are identified, classified into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 to distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic keratin family member.
