Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. They separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat through the mitochondrial proton leak. UCPs facilitate anion transfer from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and proton return transfer, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells.
UCPs contain three homologous protein domains of MACPs. The UCP1 gene is expressed specifically in brown adipose tissue, which functions to produce heat.
