Anaplastic Lymphoma Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (ALK) belongs to the insulin receptor superfamily and is essential for brain development. Mutations, rearrangements, and amplifications in the ALK gene are associated with various tumors such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, neuroblastoma, and non-small cell lung cancer.
Chromosomal rearrangements often generate fusion genes, notably NPM-ALK, which exhibits oncogenic properties. ALK encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase with transmembrane and extracellular domains, showing high sequence similarity to LTK. ALK plays a crucial role in neuronal development and signaling within the nervous system.
