Target Information

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are Zn²⁺-dependent endopeptidases involved in extracellular matrix degradation. They play roles in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological conditions like arthritis and metastasis.
MMP-23 shares sequence similarity with other MMPs but differs in domain structure. It contains prepro-, catalytic, cysteine-rich, interleukin-1 receptor-related, and proline-rich domains. Lacking a signal sequence, MMP-23 has a short prodomain and a cysteine residue that participates in the cysteine-switch mechanism for maintaining enzyme latency. It is a membrane-anchored glycoprotein with type II topology and is primarily localized perinuclearly.
