Target Information
Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Unlike apoptotic caspases, inflammatory caspases (such as caspase-1, -4, -5, and -12) are generally associated with immune responses to microbial pathogens. Caspase-1 activates proinflammatory cytokines including IL-1β and IL-18. Initially identified as an IL-1β-converting enzyme, caspase-1 was later found to be a mammalian homolog of the C. elegans cell death gene ced-3, capable of inducing apoptosis in fibroblasts.
