Target Information
Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Inflammatory caspases (such as caspase-1, -4, -5, and -12) are associated with immune responses to microbial pathogens and activate proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1β and IL-18. Caspase-1, initially identified as an IL-1β-converting enzyme, is a mammalian homolog of the C. elegans cell death gene ced-3, and its overexpression can induce apoptosis in fibroblasts.
