Target Information

Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Unlike apoptotic caspases, the inflammatory caspases (such as caspase-1, -4, -5, and -12) are primarily associated with immune responses to microbial pathogens rather than cell death. Activation of these caspases leads to cleavage and activation of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18.
Caspase-5 can interact with caspase-1, and both are components of the NALP1 inflammasome, a complex that triggers cleavage of pro-IL-1β. Expression of caspase-5 can be regulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and IFN-γ.
