The PA1-46447 immunogen corresponds to residues 49–62 of Isoforms 5 and 6 of the human MBP protein.
It also corresponds to Isoform 1 between amino acids 182–195 of the 33 kDa isoform.
This antibody detects mouse and rat MBP protein as well.
Suggested positive control: normal human brain lysate.

Target Information

The MBP (Myelin Basic Protein) gene encodes a major constituent of the myelin sheath in oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells of the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also expressed in bone marrow and the immune system.
These transcripts originate from the long MBP gene (also known as Golli-MBP), which includes three additional exons upstream of the classic MBP exons.
Alternative splicing of Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products:

• Golli-MBP transcripts contain unique exons spliced in-frame with MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
• Classic MBP transcripts contain only MBP exons and encode the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.

This complex gene structure is conserved among species, suggesting its importance in gene regulation and function.
