Target Information

S100A8/A9 heterocomplex (also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin) constitutes about 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction in circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also found in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, while neutrophils carry it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative effects, and acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils.
Plasma concentrations increase in diseases with heightened neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Calprotectin is detectable in feces due to granulocyte transmigration through the intestinal wall. Elevated calprotectin levels have been observed in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stool, and synovial fluid during infection and inflammatory conditions.
