PA1-019 detects biliverdin-IX alpha reductase (BLVRA) from human cells.
It has been successfully used in Western blot procedures.
By Western blot, this antibody detects an ~40 kDa protein representing BLVRA from HeLa cell extract.
The immunogen is purified human biliverdin reductase expressed in E. coli.

Target Information

Biliverdin reductase (BLVR) is a ubiquitously expressed, small cytoplasmic oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reduction of biliverdin to bilirubin.
The first step of this process is catalyzed by heme oxygenase, converting heme to iron, carbon monoxide, and biliverdin.
BLVR is unique in being dual pH/dual cofactor-dependent, requiring NADH (pH 6.7) or NADPH (pH 8.7) as an electron donor.
There are two isoforms:

• BLVRA (biliverdin-IX alpha-reductase): major component of human adult liver
• BLVRB (biliverdin-IX beta-reductase): found predominantly in fetal liver

The product of BLVR, bilirubin, acts as an antioxidant but can also be neurotoxic, causing kernicterus.
In addition, bilirubin inhibits kinase activity and enzymes such as protein kinase C and NADPH oxidase.
