Target Information
ERN1 (Endoplasmic Reticulum to Nucleus Signaling 1) is a human homologue of the yeast Ire1 gene product possessing intrinsic kinase and endoribonuclease activities. It plays a key role in ER-based stress signaling by sensing unfolded proteins and transmitting signals to the nucleus through XBP1 mRNA splicing. ERN1 is essential for extraembryonic cell function and fetal viability. Under stress conditions that lead to unfolded protein accumulation, depletion of IRE1 induces apoptosis.
