Target Information
ERN1 (Endoplasmic Reticulum to Nucleus Signaling 1) is a serine/threonine kinase and endoribonuclease that serves as the human homologue of the yeast Ire1 gene product. It plays a critical role in ER-based stress signaling and controls IRE1 proteolysis in mammalian cells. ERN1 is essential for fetal viability and functions as a sensor for unfolded proteins in the ER, initiating the unfolded protein response by splicing XBP1 mRNA. IRE1 is crucial for cell survival under ER stress conditions; depletion leads to apoptosis when unfolded proteins accumulate.
