Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in tumor cells and plays critical roles in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK regulates c-Myc function in proliferation and cycle control.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated c-Myc expression can induce apoptosis in various cell types.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene is found in several human cancers including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas.
Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders.
Aberrant expression of c-Myc is also observed in tumors of colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic origin.
