Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. The CEA family includes CEA cell adhesion molecules and pregnancy-specific glycoproteins located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA subgroup are also found in this region.
The encoded protein, initially identified as biliary glycoprotein, functions as a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates adhesion via homophilic and heterophilic interactions and is involved in tissue differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune modulation. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported, though not all are fully characterized.
