Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and various epithelial cells. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and mediates cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may be upregulated in carcinomas and associated with metastatic potential. It is found in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 highly, while peripheral B and T cells upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing diverse isoforms. CD44 dysfunction is linked to diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus and may relate to tumor metastasis formation.
