Target Information
The APAF1 gene encodes a cytoplasmic protein that initiates apoptosis. This protein contains several WD-40 domains, a caspase recruitment domain (CARD), and an ATPase domain (NB-ARC). Upon binding cytochrome c and dATP, it forms an oligomeric apoptosome that activates caspase 9, triggering the caspase cascade leading to apoptosis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
