Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural features with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3 and C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), providing a broad ligand-binding capacity. This enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma.
Alpha 2M functions as a panprotease inhibitor by capturing a wide range of proteinases. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, Alpha 2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting its significant role in AD pathogenesis.
