Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural and functional similarities with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3, C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting a remarkable ability to bind a wide range of ligands. This enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma. A2M functions as a broad-spectrum protease inhibitor and has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, suggesting an important role in AD pathophysiology.
