Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. A2M shares structural and functional similarities with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3, C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting a broad ligand-binding capacity. This property enables A2M to function as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma. A2M acts as a panprotease inhibitor, capturing various proteinases. In Alzheimer’s disease patients, A2M has been localized in diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting its role in AD pathogenesis.
