Target Information
IL-5 is a cytokine that acts as a growth and differentiation factor for both B cells and eosinophils. It is a main regulator of eosinopoiesis, eosinophil maturation, and activation. Elevated IL-5 production is associated with asthma and hypereosinophilic syndromes. The IL-5 receptor is a heterodimer, whose beta subunit is shared with the receptors for IL3 and CSF2 (GM-CSF). IL-5, together with IL4, IL13, and CSF2, forms a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 5. These genes are coordinately regulated by long-range regulatory elements spread over 120 kilobases on chromosome 5q31.
