Target Information

Phosphorylation of serine residues on the I-kappa-B proteins by IKK kinases, including IKBKB, marks them for destruction via the ubiquitination pathway, allowing activation of the NF-kappa-B complex.
IKK beta (Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase subunit beta) is a serine kinase essential for the NF-kappa-B signaling pathway activated by multiple stimuli such as inflammatory cytokines, bacterial or viral products, DNA damage, or other cellular stresses.
IKK beta functions as part of the canonical IKK complex, phosphorylating inhibitors of NF-kappa-B on two critical serine residues. These modifications lead to polyubiquitination and degradation of inhibitors, allowing NF-kappa-B to translocate into the nucleus and activate transcription of genes involved in immune response, growth control, and protection against apoptosis.
Mutations in the IKK beta gene can result in Immunodeficiency 15 (IMD15).
