Target Information

Survivin (IAP4) is the smallest member of the Inhibitors of Apoptosis Protein (IAP) gene family. The IAPs are involved in multiple cell functions such as cell signaling, cell division, and metabolism, and exhibit differential expression in nearly all human cancers but not in most normal tissues. Survivin encodes a protein with a single baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domain and lacks a C-terminal RING finger domain.
Expression is high during fetal development and in most tumors, yet low in adult tissues. Survivin is expressed in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle and associates with microtubules of the mitotic spindle. Disruption of this interaction leads to loss of anti-apoptotic function and increased caspase-3 activity.
Survivin is also expressed in brain tissues of adult rats following traumatic brain injury and may regulate neural cell proliferation. Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified. Overexpression of survivin in cancer may overcome apoptotic checkpoints and promote abnormal mitotic progression.
