Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP (Myelin Basic Protein) gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also expressed in bone marrow and immune system cells. These arise from the long MBP gene, also known as Golli-MBP, containing three additional exons upstream of the classic MBP exons.

Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:

  1. Golli-MBP transcripts – contain Golli-specific exons spliced to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli sequence linked to MBP sequence.
  2. Classic MBP transcripts – contain only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.

This conserved gene structure among species indicates that the MBP transcription unit is an integral part of the Golli transcription unit, playing a key role in regulation and function.
