Aldh3A1은 aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily에 속하는 효소로, NAD(P)(+)-의존적 산화 반응을 통해 다양한 지방족 및 방향족 알데하이드를 산화시킵니다. 이 단백질은 위와 각막에서 높은 발현을 보이며, 특히 포유류 각막에서 수용성 단백질의 5~50%를 차지합니다. Aldh3A1은 반응성 알데하이드 해독과 UV 에너지 직접 흡수를 통해 UV 유도 산화 스트레스로부터 각막을 보호하는 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Aldh3A1 결핍 마우스는 야생형과 큰 차이를 보이지 않으나, Aldh3A1과 Aldh1A1이 모두 결핍된 마우스는 UVB 노출 후 백내장 형성이 증가하는 것으로 보고되어, Aldh1A1이 Aldh3A1의 기능을 보상할 수 있음을 시사합니다.
