HSD11B1는 스트레스 호르몬인 코르티솔을 비활성 대사산물 코르티손으로 전환시키는 미소체 효소입니다. 또한 역반응인 코르티손을 코르티솔로 전환시키는 역할도 합니다. 과도한 코르티솔은 중심성 비만을 유발할 수 있으며, 이 유전자 변이는 소아 비만 및 인슐린 저항성과 관련이 있습니다. 두 가지 전사 변이가 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
