Target Information
Neuron-specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, catalyzing the conversion between 2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate. NSE exhibits high stability in biological fluids and diffuses into extracellular and cerebrospinal fluid upon neuronal injury.
NSE, also known as enolase gamma, is primarily expressed in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Co-expression with chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are valuable for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells. Elevated NSE levels serve as biomarkers for neuronal injury and are clinically used in conditions such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis.
Increased plasma NSE is also associated with pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
