Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs are cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each with a specific tissue expression pattern. FABP leaks rapidly from damaged or dying cells, leading to elevated serum levels. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for hepatic cell damage both in vitro and in vivo.
Damaged tissues often show low FABP presence, aiding histological identification of affected areas. Additionally, liver FABP is useful for detecting rapid hepatocyte lysis in vitro (e.g., in toxicology assays) and monitoring liver damage during and after transplantation.
