Product Specific Information

MA1-16686 detects Salmonella enteriditis, paratyphi, choleraesuis, newport, anatum, selandia, and typhimurium.
It does not react with E. coli or Klebsiella.

Target Information

The genus Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and consists of Gram-negative, facultative, and motile bacilli.
They possess three major surface antigens:

• H (flagellar) antigen – phase 1 and 2
• O (somatic) antigen – part of the LPS moiety
• Vi (capsular) antigen – also referred to as K antigen in other Enterobacteriaceae

Salmonellae have LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of:

• O polysaccharide (O antigen)
• R core
• Inner Lipid A (endotoxic component)

Endotoxins can induce fever and activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
