Target Information

Mi (Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, MITF) is a basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (b-HLH-ZIP) transcription factor involved in pigmentation, mast cell, and bone development.
Mutations in Mi cause Waardenburg Syndrome type II in humans. In mice, loss of Mi leads to depigmentation in skin, eye, and inner ear, osteopetrosis, and defects in natural killer and mast cells.
There are two known isoforms differing by 66 amino acids at the N-terminus. Shorter forms (52–56 kDa) are expressed in melanocytes, while longer forms (60–70 kDa) are found in osteoclasts, B16 melanoma cells, mast cells, and heart tissue.
