Expressed and colocalized with SLC6A3 and SNCA in axon terminals, especially at varicosities.
Isoform ARTS: Mitochondrion; Nucleus. Predominantly mitochondrial under resting conditions; translocates to nucleus after TGF-beta treatment or apoptosis induction.

Septin은 효모, 초파리, 생쥐에서 고도로 보존되어 있으며, 세포골격 구조를 조절하는 역할을 합니다.
이 유전자의 기능이 손상되면 세포질 분열(cytokinesis)이 방해받아 다핵 또는 다배수체 세포가 형성됩니다.
SEPT4는 뇌와 심장에서 높은 발현을 보이며, 다양한 스플라이싱 변형체가 존재합니다.
특히 ARTS isoform은 미토콘드리아에 존재하며, 세포자멸사(apoptosis) 및 암 관련 연구에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
