This gene encodes two proteins: sterol carrier protein X (SCPx) and sterol carrier protein 2 (SCP2), produced via transcription initiation from two independently regulated promoters.
- SCPx: Longer protein associated with peroxisomal thiolase activity and oxidation of branched-chain fatty acids.
- SCP2: Shorter protein functioning as an intracellular lipid transfer protein.
This gene is highly expressed in lipid metabolism-related organs and may be implicated in Zellweger syndrome, characterized by peroxisome deficiency and impaired bile acid synthesis. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
