Target Information
Secretin belongs to the glucagon family and functions as an endocrine hormone.
Its major production site is the endocrine S cells in the proximal small intestinal mucosa.
Release of active secretin is stimulated by fatty acids or acidic pH in the duodenum.
This hormone promotes secretion of bicarbonate-rich pancreatic fluids and regulates growth and development of the stomach, small intestine, and pancreas.
Secretin deficiency has been implicated in autistic syndrome, suggesting additional neuroendocrine roles beyond digestion.
