Target Information

This gene encodes two proteins: sterol carrier protein X (SCPx) and sterol carrier protein 2 (SCP2), resulting from transcription initiation from two independently regulated promoters.

  • The proximal promoter initiates transcription of SCPx, a peroxisome-associated thiolase involved in oxidation of branched-chain fatty acids.
  • The distal promoter initiates transcription of SCP2, an intracellular lipid transfer protein.

This gene is highly expressed in organs involved in lipid metabolism and may play a role in Zellweger syndrome, where peroxisomal deficiency impairs bile acid synthesis.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
