Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and are abundant in various cell types, playing an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing specific tissue expression patterns. Due to their small size, FABPs rapidly leak from damaged or dying cells, causing elevated serum levels.
Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo. Histologically, damaged tissues show reduced FABP presence, aiding identification of such areas. Additionally, L-FABP is a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
